The Stanley Merves Leadership Academy

The Stanley Merves Leadership Academy empowers Temple student-athletes to grow as leaders, teammates, and community members through a comprehensive blend of workshops, experiential learning, and mentorship. Designed for junior and senior student-athletes, the Academy helps participants identify their personal leadership styles, strengthen their communication and teamwork skills, and prepare for success beyond sport.

The program is named in honor of the late Dr. Stanley Merves, whose enduring legacy—along with that of his late wife, Audrey Merves—reflects their lifelong dedication to Temple University and Temple Athletics. The Merves’ generosity continues to make a lasting impact by supporting leadership development opportunities for Temple student-athletes for generations to come.

Each year, student-athletes are nominated by coaches and peers to participate in the Academy, which offers a series of interactive sessions and experiences focused on practical leadership application and self-discovery. Programming includes:

  • Leadership Development Workshops – Guided sessions focused on communication, collaboration, conflict resolution, and self-awareness.
  • Campus and Community Engagement – Opportunities to learn directly from university administrators, civic leaders, and industry professionals about leadership, service, and professional growth.
  • Team-Building Experiences – Hands-on activities such as escape rooms and ropes courses that encourage teamwork, trust, and creative problem-solving.
  • Personal Reflection and Goal Setting – Interactive workshops designed to help student-athletes articulate their vision, values, and leadership philosophy.
  • Networking and Celebration Events – Capstone experiences that connect participants with campus and city leaders, Temple alumni, and peers to celebrate their leadership journey.

In addition, the Leadership in Sport and Recreation (SRM 3231) course complements the Academy’s mission by providing a three-credit academic experience for emerging leaders. Through the study of leadership theory and real-world application, students cultivate the skills, mindset, and emotional intelligence necessary to lead with purpose both within athletics and in their future careers.

The Stanley Merves Leadership Academy remains a cornerstone of the Resnick Center’s commitment to holistic student-athlete development—empowering Owls to lead with confidence, integrity, and impact.
