Temple University is a member of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), a global institutional accreditor recognized by the United States Secretary of Education since 1952. The Commission’s accreditation process ensures institutional accountability, self-appraisal, improvement, and innovation through peer review. Temple University’s accreditation was reaffirmed in 2020 and the university is now preparing for its next evaluation visit in 2027–2028.

A message from the President

Dear Students and Colleagues,

It is a time of great momentum here at Temple University. Earlier this year, we introduced our strategic plan, Forward with Purpose, which has been organized around three priorities: Student Success, Research in Action and Place-based Impact. The plan has been designed to serve as our compass through Temple’s 150th anniversary in 2034, and it is one of the many reasons why I remain so optimistic about this university and its path forward.

Our work toward advancing the plan and its priorities is well underway. We recently became the 18th institution to join the prestigious University Innovation Alliance, and we were one of only 21 colleges and universities nationwide to receive a top designation in the categories of research and student success in the latest release of the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Last fall, we also welcomed the largest first-year class in Temple’s history.

Accomplishments like this do not just happen. The accreditation that we have maintained through the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) over the last several decades is evidence of our commitment to our mission and priorities. This accreditation is the gold standard in higher education as it affirms our unwavering dedication to continuous improvement and our ability to live up to Middle States’ rigorous standards.

To prepare for our 2027–2028 evaluation visit, colleagues across the university will convene to form committees as we seek to achieve reaccreditation. This is important work for our institution, and I invite you to learn more about this process, committee membership, intended outcomes, timelines, opportunities for participation, and the design of our self-study through this webpage.

As we begin on this path toward seeking reaccreditation, we have initiated an intensive self-study process, and there will be many opportunities for you to participate. We will soon be hosting an open session with our MSCHE liaison on April 14 from 11 to 11:45 am. This session is an opportunity for you to learn more about Middle States, the value of accreditation and the reaccreditation process.

I thank you all for your continued commitment to Temple and its mission. I am eager to join with you as we continue down the path of continuous improvement and MSCHE reaccreditation.

Sincerely,

  • John Fry
